Tight, handsome first edition of this thick anthology, signed by both compilers: On the front flyleaf, Eisenschiml pens "Sincerely, / Otto Eisenschiml" in black ink, and below this his co-compiler adds "And / Ralph Newman" in blue ink. Scholar E.B. Long, who compiled a "Pictorial Chronicle" volume to accompany a 1956 Grosset & Dunlap edition of this title, reviewed this first edition as "One of the first of the modern 'readers;' composed largely of eyewitness accounts of military events.." A tight and handsome reprint edition of this thick 1947 anthology, which scholar E.B. Long (who compiled a "Pictorial Chronicle" volume to accompany a 1956 Grosset & Dunlap edition of this title) reviewed as "One of the first of the modern 'readers;' composed largely of eyewitness accounts of military events.." This copy with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front pastedown is an original mailing envelope containing a lengthy Typed Letter Signed from Newman (1911-98), 2pp, 8½" X 11", Chicago, IL, 1986 August 5. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Superb chatty content catching up -- Newman discusses "completing my work as executor of the [Carl] Haverlin estate" in depth, his new "very rare book and manuscript business here in the John Hancock Center" since selling off the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, and other interesting Lincoln matters.
